Things you need to know

You will be shown how to do the following simple catheter care techniques:

• Empty the drainage bag

• Change the drainage bag

• Clean the catheter where it enters the penis

• Use a leg bag and connect it to a night bag for when you are asleep – this is called a 'link system'

• Identify and deal with catheter problems - the most likely of these is the catheter blocking

Men often say it is a lot to take in when they are recovering from an anaesthetic and surgery. It may be useful to have a nurse show a friend/relative as well as you how to look after your catheter.

Don't be afraid to ask questions and make sure that you feel happy with what you will have to do before you leave the hospital.

What to take home?

When you are preparing to go home, make sure you have:

• Written information about how to care for your catheter

• Details of who to contact if your catheter becomes blocked

• A spare night bag with a stand

• A leg bag in the correct size (volume and tube length) with straps

If your catheter feels uncomfortable or is pulling, tell the nursing staff. There are special devices or tape which can be used to support the catheter in place on your leg.
