People who have dementia have a higher chance of developing both bladder and bowel leakage. Dementia can also make managing these problems more difficult. The added challenges for people with dementia include:
- not recognising the body’s signals that they need to go to the toilet
- not remembering to use continence containment products or using them incorrectly
- not knowing if they have experienced leakage
We have developed detailed and practical continence advice for the carers of people living at home with dementia and to help healthcare professionals to provide support available at www.demcon.org.uk.
Please note that the sections for people living with dementia and homecare workers are under development.
