What are catheters?
- A catheter is a flexible tube that is inserted into the bladder, to drain the urine. Catheters should only be used after a thorough assessment by a healthcare professional (ref maki et al 2001). There are two main types of catheter:
[Intermittent] (www.continenceproductadvisor.org/products/intermittent catheters - these are often called in/out, nelaton or Robinson catheters and are inserted into the bladder just to allow it to be emptied and are then removed
[Indwelling] (www.continenceproductadvisor.org/products/intermittent catheters)- often called Foley catheters they are designed to remain in the bladder for a continuous period of time. They can either be inserted into the bladder via the urethra in which case they are called Urethral catheters alternatively, if necessary, they can be inserted through the abdomen (during a small surgical procedure) in which case they are called Supra-pubic
